Sailfish are the acrobats of the ocean – sleek, fast fish with that distinctive sail-like dorsal fin. They average 7-8 feet and around 50 pounds, built for speed and agility. You’ll find them in 30-200 feet, following bait schools and temperature breaks. Winter months bring our best action as they migrate through Florida waters. What makes sailfish special is the show they put on – multiple jumps, long runs, and that sail flashing in the sunlight. They’re strictly catch and release, but the fight is what you’re after anyway. These fish hunt in packs, so where you find one, there’s usually more. We troll with live bait or kite fish to get them fired up. Key tip: when you see that sail come up behind the bait, don’t rush it – let them eat and get the hook set before they realize what happened.

Cobia are unique fish that often get mistaken for sharks with their dark brown color and single dorsal fin. They average 6 feet and can push 100 pounds, making them one of the strongest fighters you’ll encounter. These guys love structure – wrecks, reefs, and buoys in 30-70 feet of water. Spring migration brings our best action as they move through during spawning season. What makes cobia fishing special is the sight fishing aspect – you’ll often see them cruising just under the surface. They’re curious fish that will come check out the boat. The meat is firm and delicious, some of the finest table fare around. My go-to setup is a bucktail jig in any color – don’t let anyone tell you color matters with these fish. Key tip: when you spot one, approach slowly and drop that jig right in front of their nose.

Mahi are some of the most colorful fish you’ll hook out here – bright gold sides with electric blue and green that flash like a light show when they come to the boat. They typically run 15-29 pounds, though we’ve seen them push 50+. You’ll find them around floating debris, weed lines, and current breaks, usually in the top 50 feet of water. Spring through fall gives us our best action, especially when the Gulf Stream pushes closer to shore. What makes mahi special is their aggressive nature – they’ll often travel in small schools and get competitive when one gets hooked. The meat is firm and sweet, perfect for the dinner table. Pro tip: when you hook one, keep your other lines out because their buddies usually stick around for a few minutes looking for an easy meal.

About the Boat

These are the giants of the reef – massive grouper that can reach 8 feet and 800 pounds. They’re homebodies that stick around wrecks, reefs, and structure in shallow tropical waters, usually under 150 feet. You’ll find them year-round in our area, though summer gives you the best shot. What makes goliath fishing memorable is that first pull – it’s like hooking into a small truck. They’re protected, so it’s strictly catch and release, but the photo opportunity is worth it. These fish are curious and will often approach divers and boats. You need heavy tackle – 80-wide reels with 400-600 pound mono and big circle hooks. Fresh crab, stingray, or jack work best for bait. Pro tip: anchor close enough to the structure to get their attention, but far enough away that you can pull them off the reef before they break you off in the rocks.

About the Boat

Wahoo are built for speed – these torpedo-shaped fish can hit 60 mph and average 3-5 feet long. They’re loners that cruise the blue water looking for flying fish and squid. You’ll typically find them in 30-200 feet, often near temperature breaks or current edges. Our peak season runs July through November when they move closer to shore. What gets anglers fired up is the initial run – pure lightning that’ll strip line faster than anything else out there. The meat is white, flaky, and mild – some of the best eating fish in the ocean. For the best shot at one, we troll fast with wire leaders since their razor teeth will cut through mono in a heartbeat. Watch for diving birds working bait schools – that’s often where wahoo are feeding just below the surface.

These big, fast, slender predators are super fun to catch! King Mackerel reach nearly 100 lbs and six feet in length. Most of the kings we catch in the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area will be in the 10 to 45 lbs and 30 to 45 inches range but all king mackerels are famous for their high-speed, drag-screaming runs. King Mackerel are often found around the many artificial reefs and wrecks just off the coast of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach. The best time to catch King Mackerel in the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area is when they follow migrating baitfish close to shore during the spring and fall. They can also be found near the Ponce Inlet jetties, feeding off schools of baitfish during the summer, so they’re here and biting most of the year.
